Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng born 21 November, 1985. Non-primary source needed is a Malaysian
comedian and actor. Chieng is currently a senior correspondent on The Daily
Show on Comedy Central. He also created and stars the sitcom Ronny Chieng
International Student, that premiered on ABC Australia (Australia) in 2017.
Chieng was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to a Malaysian Chinese family. Chieng
grew up both in Singapore as well as in the United States, living in
Manchester, New Hampshire from 1989 to 1994. Chieng performed alongside Trevor
Noah at a Melbourne comedy festival in 2013. Chieng was offered the Daily
Show's correspondent position two years after. In July of 2016 Chieng was
selected as one of the 10 Comics to Check out by Variety In October, Chieng
appeared on The Daily Show to offer his take on Jesse Watters Fox News segment
considered racist by many. Chieng airs an expletive-filled critique of the
segment on Fox News that was deemed conservative by many. He also returned to New
York City's Chinatown. Watters had mocked the people living there and gave
respectful interviews in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese. The video went viral
and was featured by the Washington Post, Slate, and other media publications.
Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout in his early years. While he's been in
Australia for the past decade, he does not have citizenship or permanent
residence status in Australia. Chieng joked in 2018 that he was cynophobic, but
afterwards, he said he was 100 percent not afraid of dogs.
